On September 16th , PLIB District Supervisor John Hamilton teamed up with PLIB Member Patrick Lumber Company and NAWLA to conduct a short course on lumber grading. The event was held at Patrick Lumber Company’s new headquarters, a perfect venue for this type of event, as part of NAWLA’s Fall Wood Basics week which was held in Corvallis, OR from September 15-19. About 30 students participated in the course, which was design as an introductory lesson in the basics of lumber grading for people who are new to the industry or whose jobs do not expose them to lumber manufacturing and grading. During the hour-long course, Hamilton covered lumber characteristics that affect grade recovery, structural integrity and appearance. “I enjoyed teaching this class as the students were all very respectful and eager to learn about the grading process,” said Hamilton.  “The attendees were very interactive in the learning process and some even volunteered for some hands on training. NAWLA does a great job organizing this event to provide knowledge of the timber/lumber industry for newcomers to the industry. Thank you to the NAWLA committee who allowed me to be a part of this annual training.”
