SPF No. 1/No. 2 Grade vs. MSR European Species

The table below shows a comparison of 2×4 sized European MSR to Canadian SPF lumber. As shown in the table, 1350 Fb 1.4E European MSR has design values that are equal to or greater than No. 1/No. 2 grade SPF.

Size: 2×4
Size factors: All size factors are the same for SPF No. 1/No. 2 and MSR

GRADE Fb (psi) Ft (psi) Fv (psi) Fc,perp (psi) Fc (psi) E (psi) SG
Canadian SPF No. 1/No. 2 1,313 675 135 425 1,323 1,400,000 0.42
European MSR 1350f-1.4E 1,350 750 150 465 1600 1,400,000 0.42

*Specific Gravity (SG) values can vary by country. To ensure that the SG of European MSR is equivalent to SPF, the MSR grade stamp should include the phrase “SG 0.42” or higher.

PLIB has developed several useful online calculators to assist consumers, engineers, designers and code officials. One of them is our online Design Value Comparison calculator.

This tool allows the user to quickly compare the design values of any combination of grades, species, and countries and also provides a table that shows the limiting design value for stamps that have a combination of species and/or countries. Step-by-step instructions for how to use the comparison calculator are shown on the pages that follow.
